Our final senior spotlight this week is on Senior Adrina Volkman. Adrina is the granddaughter of Russel and Linay Jones. While in high school she was involved in Volleyball, Track, Softball, FCCLA, HOSA, Yearbook, Student Council, Prom Committee, and Senior Class President. Her future plans are to attend Emporia State University and her major is undecided. When asked her favorite high school memory she stated, “definitely anytime during volleyball season playing with my teammates and then taking our WSL medals home for 1st.” Her favorite classes are Mrs. Mein’s cooking class. “Yes for the food but she is very much like our mom. If she saw we were having a bad day she would talk to you and see what was wrong or if you’re me and you get food on your shirt she would always have a couple extra shirts in her closet that she would let you have.” The hardest part of not being together in school right now is not being able to walk with her class and being around all of them for their lasts and not being able to make more memories. Adrina would like to share with the underclassmen, “enjoy your days being in High School because it really does go fast, go out and spend the time with your friends, be involved, and make all the high school memories that you can before it's over.” Congratulations Adrina! #railerproud

Our Senior Spotlight is on Dakota Swader. Dakota is the daughter of Stacey and Mike Swader. During high school she has been involved in Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Track, HOSA and FFA. Her future plans are to take a semester off and continue to work to be independent. “I want to be able to support myself before I head off to college.” Her favorite high school memory “ is probably basketball season. Coach T and Coach K made my transition to herington easier because I had a practice that I knew would challenge me but would be able to have fun at the same time. Learning lessons about life and basketball. Family is important and very needed in life.” Her favorite core class was history because there was always a fun and eventful time. Mr. Hirsch knew when someone needed some cheering up. When asked what she missed most about not physically being in school she said, “not being able to walk the stage, go to any track meets, go to my senior prom, or create any more memories with friends during school.” Her message to underclassmen is “live your high school years to the fullest because you never know if or when you will miss an activity that you wish you could go and do. Don’t try to grow up too quickly!” Her message to her teachers is “I want to thank the teachers that have been there for me throughout the years. I appreciate all you have done for me. Thankful for all the memories I have been able to make, good and bad, they have made me a better person. I would also like to thank my family for helping and supporting me through the years. I love you!” Best of Luck Dakota! #railerproud

Senior Spotlight features Makayla Stiles. Makayla is the daughter of Dustin and VerNonda Stiles. While in high school she has been involved in Volleyball, Basketball,Track, Softball, Tree Huggers, Salina Area Tech, Gaming Club, Drama, FFA, HOSA, blood drives, vocal, homecoming queen candidate, and a Beta Organization volunteer. After high school she said, “I plan on continuing my education on schooling at Salina Area Technical college through the welding program, currently with me already have going I will have my certificate in welding at the end of this year but I am planning on going back to college to take the half of a semester that is needed to get my associates degree in welding.” Her favorite high school memory was decorating floats at homecoming. “Showing our school pride to the rest of the town and as well to give the younger generations something to look forward to doing that is fun when they get into high school.” Her favorite classes in school were culinary arts because she loves to cook, and history. “When Mr. Hirsch came to this school and started teaching it. I loved it because he was able to make me interested in something I used to never like.” The final classes she liked were her shop classes with all of the ag teachers that she has had throughout her time at Herington High School. The hardest part of not physically being in school is, “not being able to complete my senior year would have to be not being able to do my last year of track as well as not being able to make lasting memories with the rest of my class and the underclassmen.” Her advice to underclassmen is, “make memories while you can have fun with everyone in your class and do things you want to. High school year goes by fast, don't be afraid to try something new because who knows you may really enjoy it. Make the memories of your high/middle school years fun and don't take time for granted because at some point later on you're going to wish that you would have worked harder in the things that you didn't but overall make your high/middle school years fun and memorable.” In a final note, “I would like to thank all of the teachers that have helped me through the years from elementary to high school. You have all made an impact on my life and I will never be able to forget it. I'd like to thank my coaches that I have had.You have all made me love sports but have also taught me a lot about teamwork and being able to work well and efficiently with others even if everyone doesn't see eye to eye all the time. Finally I would like to thank the school board for allowing me the chance to go to Salina Area Technical College. It has been an amazing experience and has shown me a lot from my junior year till now you have allowed me to further my education even farther while being in high school. To everyone thinking about going to college while you are in school it is difficult but it is so worth it in the end between the memories made at college and the ones made at high school as well as being taught more about the things that you enjoy doing it is truly and honestly an eye opening experience and I honestly believe that even though I was the one that started going there that I hope many more go. It really is an amazing experience. I was able to go through two years of college and high school as well as doing sports year round while it is difficult it is so worth it it gets a little hectic at times but oh well the memories as well as things that i have been taught at Salina Area Tech has made me an even better person and it will make you as well don't be afraid to take the chance of going.” Congratulations Makayla. #railerproud

USD 487 athletes and parents. To participate in any sport you must have a preparticipation physical on file at the school. With this school year winding down and the possibility of our fall sports practices starting next August, now is the time to think about scheduling an appointment for a physical. With the current health pandemic, it may take longer than usual to get an appointment scheduled. I have provided a link for the preparticipation physical form below. http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/PDF/FORM-PPE.pdf

Senior Spotlight is on Lauren Simmons. Lauren is the daughter of Gary and Kristy Simmons. In high school she was involved in Cheerleading, Band, FCCLA, HOSA, and Tree Huggers. Her future plans are to attend ESU to pursue a nursing degree. Lauren’s favorite high school memory is from senior fall homecoming, “building our senior float with all my closest friends, riding on the razors through the parade, giving the football boys speech downtown, and standing on the football field as a queen candidate.” Her favorite classes in school were anything with Ms. Clark. “She has had the biggest impact on me. I love you Ches! <3” What Lauren misses most about being physically in school is, “walking out the front doors not knowing it would be my last time as a student, and not being able to walk across the stage and receive my diploma as all my family watched and cheered for me.” Her message to underclassmen is, “be involved with as many activities as you can, step out of your comfort zone, because I regret not being more involved. Be yourself and don't be afraid to ask for help. Listen to your parents, when they say don't go to that party, DON'T GO TO THE PARTY! Have common sense. Make as many memories as you can with your classmates as you can, they are your family. Sit in the student section, be loud and be proud, go to prom, dress up for spirit week and experience high school, you wont regret it. All in all just have fun!” Best wishes Lauren! #railerproud
