The HES October student of the month is Mia Espino, a 5th grade student in Mrs. Schneider's class. Some words that describe Mia are genuine, responsible, and caring. She is one of the hardest working students in our school. She tries her best on every task that she is given, and never fails to complete her work on time. Mia has already completed her AR goal for the 2nd nine weeks. She is a wonderful and trusting friend to all of her peers, and is the first one to help her classmates when asked. Mia is doing a great job and we look forward to the rest of the year! Congratulations, and keep up the good work! Mia is the daughter of Demetria Garcia and Juan Espino.

HHS October Student of the Month - Jade Ottens
Jade Ottens is the daughter of Scott and Becky Walls and Thomas Jones.
Jade believes she was chosen because “I am very helpful and am involved in a variety of activites in the school”.
Jade is a senior at Herington High School, who involves herself in: volleyball manager, basketball manager, FCCLA, drama club, and forensics.
Mr. Hirsch believes Jade was chosen for Student of the Month “because she has a bubbly personality! She always wants to better herself and see what she can do to help in a situation. Her laughter is also contagious!”

In Mrs. Brunner's 4th grade class, the students read the story, "The Buffalo Are Back," about the way Native Americans worked in Kansas to keep the prairie grasslands healthy. This included burning off the grass each year. Nathan Brunner, owner of prescribed burning company Fire 4 Hire, visited the class. He shared pictures and videos of past burns his company completed, including a recent 800 acre prescribed burn of Maxwell Wildlife Preserve. He also brought in some of his tools and fire gear. The class had a great time learning and comparing how the Native Americans took care of the grasslands to how we do the same thing today. #backontrack

The middle school staff members chose 6th grader, Alexis Sjodahl, as the October Student of the Month. Alexis participates in Band, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Swim Team, Weightlifting, Softball and Student Council. Alexis feels that she was chosen at the Middle School Student of the Month because she listens to her teachers when they are speaking, she gets her work done on time, she helps her classmates and she is a safe, responsible and respectful student. Alexis is the daughter of Mike and Jennifer Sjodahl.
