Herington Elementary School (HES) is a community school where the staff and stakeholders take a tremendous amount of pride in the quality of the education provided to the Railer students. The Herington community has a wide range of socio-economic status amongst its families. A commitment to high-level instructional programs and educational opportunities allows all students at HES to succeed. One of these key strategies is our Railway Behavior Expectations. These expectations were created by teacher leaders at Herington Elementary and updated with feedback from other staff, parents, and students. To supplement these Railway Behavior Expectations HES utilizes a positive behavior intervention system, weekly tier one behavior/social/emotional learning lessons, and a partnership with Central Kansas Mental Health Services. Herington Elementary School's Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) has been an impactful strategy for all our students. Staff create intervention groups tailored to student needs using our MTSS framework. Teachers and interventionists monitor students' attainment of academic skills on a regular basis through progress monitoring activities. Herington Elementary staff collaborate monthly to use data-based decision making to ensure that students are receiving the targeted academic intervention they need at all times. Other academic services focus on STEM opportunities and innovative programs like Middle School U (locally created transition program for 5th grade students going to middle school). Finally, the most significant aspect of Herington Elementary School, is the positive school culture based upon seeing each of the students thrive in their own, unique way!
